Dog Bite Treatment Methods For Your Dog

Dog bite wounds are the usual cause of trauma in dogs and commonly a result from clashing with other dogs, cats and related animals. Bite wounds are puncture wounds and even they are small they may cause a problem to your dog. It doesn't matter if it's tiny enough from the outside but indeed it cuts deep inside the dog's tissues and muscles.

With this scenario, the possibility of having high risk of infection is at large due to different kinds of bacteria that can be found in a dog's mouth. The risk for this is there's a tendency for the bacteria to be trapped inside the dog's wound and can grow inside resulting to abscess since the small wound can heal fast once a simple dog bite treatment is done.

Here are some of the steps that you need to do to perform dog bite treatment:

Control the bleeding from the dog bite wound

Stop the bleeding by using a clean towel or a piece of clean cloth and apply pressure to the wound. In most cases, dog bites are proven to bleed more than cat bites and also depends on what area in the dog's body is bitten. Bites to the legs and trunk may not bleed much compared to vascular ears and nose.

Consult a Vet to check the dog bite wound

It is important to seek help from a veterinarian since they are the ones who can check whether how deep is the wound and how to apply thorough treatment to the wound. The vet can also check if a dead space is present to the wound, it happens when a skin is pulled out from the inner subcutaneous tissue and creates a space where air can penetrate to the tissue. In this instance, the bacteria can grow and has the tendency to abscess when not given quick and proper attention. For cases when the size of the wound is small and shallow, the vet will clean the wound and prescribe appropriate antibiotics which are otherwise for wounds that are deep that may need a surgical drain to apply proper treatment.

Home care for the dog bite wound

In treating the wound to heal fast, a regular cleaning is required. Apply the wound with hydrogen peroxide moistened gauze 3 or 4 times and also apply small amount of triple antibiotic ointment such as Neospirin to the dog bite's wound. Even if we are doing this right, we still need to monitor the appearance of the dog bite since it has 3 signs of infection such as excessive redness, swelling and purulent discharge. If these signs are noticed from your dog's wound, consult immediately to the vets for further treatment of the wound.
